Breitling Watch Bezel Removal
How to Remove the Bezel of a Breitling Watch
Today we are going to show you how to remove a bezel from a Breitling SuperOcean with the rotating bezel. This specific model is the 44mm A17391. If you look, there are six little tiny screws around in the bezel pretty much at the 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 o’clock markers.
Tools Needed to Remove the Breitling Bezel
In order to remove the bezel, you will need a few important tools.
- Some kind of magnification or Optivisor is highly recommended.
- A watch case opener or blade to provide leverage between the watch case and the bezel.
- Most importantly, the correct size screwdriver. The number 5 Flathead fits perfectly (the wrong size can cause damage).
We want to be sure the head of the screwdriver fits correctly into the screw. Not too loose and not too big. You do not want to damage the screws or bezel.
Now, you will notice that one of the screws is at the 3 o’clock position which will interfere with the crown of the watch. We simply just need to rotate the bezel a bit before removing the screws.
We have a jewelers bench, which has a slide out “catch tray” that we hold over just in case a screw was to fall out. You should be sure and only remove the screws in an area in which you will not be afraid if the screw was to fall out.
Sometimes dirt and debris will accumulate between the threads of the screw and the bezel making it a little hard to get traction on the screw threads. To get the screws turning sometimes you may actually have to tighten it first, in order for the screw to loosen up a bit.
We do work over our jewelers bench with catch tray, so we do remove the screws completely from the bezel. If you do not have the setup or afraid you might lose the screw, you can unscrew the screws but leave them in until it’s loose enough to completely remove the bezel. You would then need to be careful with the bezel and the screws inside, so either way you decide, care should be taken with the tiny screws.
Removing the Breitling Bezel
Now that your screws are out, take a blade or case opener and run it along the case and use it gently as a lever to pop the bezel off. We tend to pop it from the 1 o’clock & 7 o’clock. You should be able to hear it. It actually makes an audible pop. Then remove your bezel.
As you can see, the bezel can trap debris and grime from normal wear. We clean our watch parts in an ultrasonic to get all of the dirt and grit out of those small teeth from the underside. After cleaning, it is time to replace the bezel.
Replacing the Breitling Bezel
To replace the bezel, all you need to do is align evenly and apply even pressure equally on each side of the bezel with your thumbs and you should hear the snap. You should now be able to smoothly rotate the bezel and here the ratcheting clicks.
The final step is to replace the screws. This requires the same precision and attention to detail as when you remove them. Be careful to tighten fully, but take care not to over tighten.
