One of the most talked about and debated guns in recent memory is the Mossberg Shockwave. What is it exactly? Is it a pistol? A shotgun? How about a pistol-grip shotgun? Is it legal in Texas? These are just a few of the questions we will tackle in our latest blog post.

Mossberg Shockwave - What is it & is it legal in Texas?

What is the Mossberg Shockwave?

We get this question on a near daily basis now. Everyone wants to know what it is. The BATF describes it as a "firearm", not a shotgun, not a pistol or a class 3 NFA weapon. To read the full statement from the BATF to Mossberg you can by clicking HERE.

Who can purchase a Mossberg 590 Shockwave?

So who can purchase the Mossberg Shockwave? The "firearm" classification by the BATF requires the purchaser to be at least 21 years of age. This is similar to that of a standard pistol grip shotgun or firearm receiver.

Is the 590 Shockwave legal in Texas?

As of this writing, the State of Texas has passed a bill, 85R HB, that makes the Mossberg Shockwave legal to own in Texas. To read this bill click HERE.

The kicker, and most commonly over looked part of the bill is the effective date. This bill does not go into effect until September 1st, 2017. So even though you are legally able to purchase this firearm, you are not allowed to take possession of said firearm until September 1st, 2017 for Texas residents.
